Recently my family and I went to the Austin Zoo. 

It’s not exactly San Diego, but let me tell you, any event where I see a chicken that’s wearing MC Hammer feather pants in the first 5 minutes is a win.

Alas, we did not make it to the monkeys. 

But I’ve seen enough in my day to know that they can get pretty big. And heavy. 

The most distracting?

The monkeys we carry on our backs. (See what I did there? Heh heh….)


Yep, I’m talking about the metaphorical monkeys we carry around in the form of unfinished tasks. 

I know, because I hefted around one for the last week. 

It was in the form of a presentation that I had to create for my Army Reserves job. It was heavy, smelly, and not something I was interested in dealing with.

So I let it sit on my to-do list.

And that monkey went absolutely APR my subconscious, interrupting my otherwise delightful and productive moments. 


So how do you get a monkey off your back and get more done?

Throw it a banana, of course.

As in, do the dang thing.

Just the very first little step.

Start even though you don’t feel like it.

Start even if you don’t plan on finishing.

Because 9 time’s out of 10, you actually will finish.


And you’ll find that once you’re able to do the thing you’ve been avoiding:

  1. it wasn’t nearly as difficult as you thought it would be.
  2. You feel freaking amazing without it hanging over your head.
  3. You’re instantly on fire because your subconscious says, “BOOM! What else you got?!” 


So go on and crack open that banana of action on your monkey so you can get on with the things you’re actually looking forward to doing.
